Here I sit, in the Frankfurt Airport at 11:00 a.m., blogging. This airport offers excellent free wifi and I have a few hours to kill before my connecting flight to Washington D.C. How fortunate that I have a blog. Otherwise I’d be really bored right now.
This is where I’m sitting, right now, and this is my blog.
Would you too like to have a blog of your own, to pass the time during endless airport layovers? If so, you should attend my #2SummersBlogClass on 19 November at Bridge Books.
I held my first blog class back in July, and I must confess I was nervous about it. First I was worried that no one would sign up, and once people did sign up I was worried that no one would like this class. That didn’t happen though. Everyone loved the class, including me. I received several nice comments afterward but here is my favorite, from #2SummersBlogClass participant Roslyn:
“The day did exactly what the advertising said it would – I learned to blog! We created the structure and did the technical tasks and then got tips about how to write and how to include photographs. Heather’s style of mixing anecdotes with instructions really helped. I thoroughly recommend the workshop.”
The first #2SummersBlogClass.
Here are a few of the topics I’ll be covering during the one-day class:
Why (and why not) to blog
Blogging as a career
How to set up a Wordpress blog in under 10 minutes
My top tips for creating and maintaining a great blog
Blogging and photography
Blogging and social media
The class will take place at the beautiful Bridge Books shop in the center of Joburg, and will include a downtown photowalk and some other surprises.
There are currently eight spots left and the spots filled up quickly last time after I published an announcement on my blog. So don’t delay. To sign up, visit this page and click “Add to Cart”. The class costs R1500. If you have any issues signing up, please email info@bridgebooks.co.za.
If you have any other questions, ask away. I’m about to finish this blog post and then I’ll be bored at the airport again.
I guess it’s wrong to say I’ve never blogged about 44 Stanley; I’ve mentioned it countless times over the years (see here and here) when writing about specific restaurants or shops that are there. But I’ve never written a dedicated post about 44 Stanley as a destination and it’s about time I did – especially now, with the holidays upon us.
In 2020, I published a blog post with tips for Americans living in South Africa who wanted to vote in the U.S. presidential election. I thought about simply resharing that post this year. But then I realized: 1) I want to write a U.S. election post that will be fun and informative for everyone, not just other Americans; and 2) Believe it or not, the U.S. presidential election stakes are even higher in 2024 than they were in 2020. So I’m introducing you to some really cool Americans in Joburg – one who I’ve known forever and two who I just met – and tell you a bit about who they are, why they live here, and why they vote.

It makes me smile, when I see it.
