Poetry, like many other things, is different in Africa than in other parts of the world.

Thumelo, a South African poet, performs today at the Sophiatown Bar & Lounge in Melville.

My camera was at the repair shop for much of this week, which gave me a great excuse to shoot more pictures with my iPad.

The perfect rose, shot in a garden in Northcliff. Once you get used to using it, the iPad is great for still-life/macro shots. Just find the perfect angle, hold your hand steady, and wait for it to focus.

When I first decided to move to Johannesburg, I had vague fantasies about going out on the town here and “experiencing” jazz. The idea of listening to jazz in a cosmopolitan African city appealed to me. Joburg is known to be a hotbed for jazz musicians.

I’ve always been a storyteller. For the last two years, this blog has been a place where I combine words and photos to tell stories. I haven’t thought of my photos as creative or artistic, at least not consciously. First and foremost, my photos are storytelling tools.
