I considered writing about various things today:

Lockdown Journal: Day 42 (Shattered)

It’s Day 42 of the South African lockdown – the day my phone screen shattered.

Broken phone
Lockdown photo 42: Shattered dreams (I mean screen). Little bits of glass flake off each time I touch it.

This morning I made the rookie mistake of trying to hold my phone in my armpit while dragging the hose around the garden, watering plants. The phone slipped out (duh) and landed face-down on cement, which was too much impact for my previously impervious rubber phone case. That case has served me well through three years and countless phone-drops, but one can only expect so much from a thin piece of rubber.

For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, the “Airing of Grievances” was made famous by Seinfeld character Frank Costanza in the 1990s. The Airing of Grievances usually takes place during the fake holiday of Festivus, on 23 December. Festivus the holiday has its own website with a page devoted to the Airing of Grievances.

Welcome to Lockdown Day 40. It’s also Cinco de Mayo, which doesn’t mean much in South Africa but I couldn’t think of a better title.

Lockdown Journal: Day 39 (The Arabbers)

It’s Day 39 of the South African lockdown.

I woke up late, supremely unmotivated, and spent much of the morning conducting a photoshoot with three horned melons (also called kiwanos, African horned cucumbers, spiked melons, and many other names).

Lockdown Journal: Day 38 (Walking Thoughts)

Read all my lockdown journal posts.

It’s Day 38 of the South African lockdown, and the third day of Lockdown Level 4. I took my second Level 4 walk through Melville this morning (here’s my account of the first one) and spent a lot of time thinking as I walked.
