Joburg City Fest: Beer, Bright Lights and BCUC

The Joburg City Festival started two days ago and I’m already behind. There are at least half a dozen awesome events every day – I can’t do it all while also finding time to tell you about it. I’ve taken thousands of pictures already.

"Kwa" for the Crois-Nut

I had never heard of a Cronut until a few weeks ago, when I was browsing Instagram and came upon a picture of one. I was intrigued.

Introduced four months ago by Chef Dominique Ansel of New York City, a Cronut is a pastry hybrid – half croissant, half donut. A croissant-donut! How has no one ever thought of this before? Could there be anything more brilliant?

The Other Ethiopian Joint in Maboneng

My recent post about the pop-up burger joint was a big hit. Since I seem to be on a quirky restaurant roll, I thought I’d tip you off to another hidden joint I recently discovered: Mr. James’ Ethiopian restaurant on the edge of Maboneng.

Last Supper at Gramadoelas

Gramadoelas is the most famous restaurant in downtown Joburg. It opened 46 years ago in a Hillbrow garage, and has been in its current location next to the Market Theatre in Newtown since 1992. Gramadoelas serves traditional South African food with an exotic twist, and has hosted some of the world’s most prominent politicians and celebrities.
