Pretoria Jacarandas: A Photo Bonanza

This week, the last week of October, is peak jacaranda week in Joburg. The trees are laden with flowers and each breeze brings a shower of purple blossoms raining down onto the street. But the Pretoria jacarandas peaked about two weeks ago, and I was lucky enough to catch them during an epic photowalk hosted by Johannesburg In Your Pocket and the Joburg Photowalkers.

A Jacaranda Special: Purple Pastries in Westcliff

It’s that time of year again: October in Joburg. Jacaranda trees all over Joburg (and Pretoria, too – more on that in a future post) are exploding with purple blossoms and everything wrong with the world feels right again (mostly). To make matters better, Joburg’s hospitality industry actively promotes jacaranda season and there are some really cool promotions on, like the jacaranda-themed “Bubbles & Sweets” menu at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westcliff.

A Jacaranda Weekend in Rosebank

Last weekend I led a jacaranda walk through Rosebank and neighboring Parkwood for Johannesburg in Your Pocket, followed by sundowners in a penthouse at the Tyrwhitt.

View from the enormous penthouse balcony at the Tyrwhitt – perfect for post-walk sundowners – with blooming jacaranda trees in the distance.

Although the jacaranda blooming season is on the wane, we still found plenty of purple vistas to photograph and the trees looked great from the Tyrwhitt’s 9th-floor penthouse balcony. Plus it was Halloween weekend and hoards of cute trick-or-treaters added to the vibe.

A Jacaranda Walk Through Rosebank

On Saturday morning, I hosted a jacaranda walk through Rosebank with Johannesburg In your Pocket and the Radisson RED Johannesburg.

Jacaranda outside the Radisson RED hotel
One of the best purple clouds in Rosebank is right outside the Radisson RED, where our jacaranda walk began. In case you’re wondering, that angel wing installation is called "The Mundane and the Magical" and was created by artist Usha Seejarim.

The jacaranda blossoms aren’t peaking yet in most of Joburg’s inner suburbs. There’s some speculation this could be an off-year or, more worryingly, that Joburg’s jacarandas might finally be reaching the end of their life spans. But my unfounded panic last year – which turned out to be a great jacaranda year despite a late-ish start – taught me not to count the jacarandas out too soon.
