A Brixton Mosaic in Rosebank

This is a quick post advising Joburg art-lovers to go to the Everard Read Gallery in Rosebank to check out the beautiful mosaic in the courtyard. It was made in Brixton.

Hadeda
The hadeda is, of course, my favorite part.
Aloes
I love the aloes too.
Bird in mosaic
I also like this bird although I don’t know what species it is.

I’ve always liked visiting Everard Read, which is in the middle of Rosebank’s art district – it’s a lovely gallery and always has great exhibitions. (Check out the fabulous “Bitches Brew” group exhibition that’s up now – it’s on until 6 May.) But I like it even more now that there’s a giant mosaic mural there, made by my neighbor.

A Jacaranda Weekend in Rosebank

Last weekend I led a jacaranda walk through Rosebank and neighboring Parkwood for Johannesburg in Your Pocket, followed by sundowners in a penthouse at the Tyrwhitt.

View from the enormous penthouse balcony at the Tyrwhitt – perfect for post-walk sundowners – with blooming jacaranda trees in the distance.

Although the jacaranda blooming season is on the wane, we still found plenty of purple vistas to photograph and the trees looked great from the Tyrwhitt’s 9th-floor penthouse balcony. Plus it was Halloween weekend and hoards of cute trick-or-treaters added to the vibe.

A Jacaranda Walk Through Rosebank

On Saturday morning, I hosted a jacaranda walk through Rosebank with Johannesburg In your Pocket and the Radisson RED Johannesburg.

Jacaranda outside the Radisson RED hotel
One of the best purple clouds in Rosebank is right outside the Radisson RED, where our jacaranda walk began. In case you’re wondering, that angel wing installation is called "The Mundane and the Magical" and was created by artist Usha Seejarim.

The jacaranda blossoms aren’t peaking yet in most of Joburg’s inner suburbs. There’s some speculation this could be an off-year or, more worryingly, that Joburg’s jacarandas might finally be reaching the end of their life spans. But my unfounded panic last year – which turned out to be a great jacaranda year despite a late-ish start – taught me not to count the jacarandas out too soon.

My Favorite Jozi Coffee Shops: Toasted in Parkwood

Tenth in an occasional series about my favorite coffee shops in Joburg.

Remember the good old days, when I used to meet people for coffee in interesting places and then blog about it? I’m ready to bring those days back.

Beef. It's What's for Dinner (on my birthday).

Note: The title of this post refers to an American advertising campaign for beef. I’m no fan of the American beef industry but the slogan fits the post.

I recently had coffee in Rosebank (a shopping district just north of Melville) with my blogger friend Jane. After coffee we popped into The Grillhouse – one of the most popular steakhouses in Joburg – to say hello to Jane’s friend David, the Grillhouse’s operations manager.
