I often say that Joburg is a great city to live in but a difficult city to visit. It’s not like Paris or New York, where you can just pop out from the subway, basically anywhere, and entertain yourself for days (assuming you have a big load of cash). Joburg takes a bit more time and effort to get to know and it helps tremendously if you have a local to guide you.

A few weeks ago I spent a fantastic weekend at the Grootbos Nature Reserve, a five-star lodge in the Overberg region of South Africa’s Western Cape. The Overberg, which comprises a stretch of coastline between Cape Town and the Garden Route, is one of the most beautiful places in South Africa.

I recently spent a few days in the Cape Winelands as part of the #MeetSouthAfrica local blogger trip. We ate a lot (you already know this) and drank a lot. We also rode bicycles, watched epic sunsets, and met a cute, aggressive, cork-nibbling parrot. I took many photos.
